What Can You Talk About In Premarital Counseling?
Every couple brings different strengths, expectations, and concerns into marriage. Our conversations will reflect what matters to both of you. Some topics we can explore include:
Communication and Conflict
What happens when you disagree? Have you had a major argument yet? Do small misunderstandings turn into arguments neither of you intended? We can explore those patterns and practice expressing concerns, listening, and navigating difficult conversations with greater understanding.
Money and Shared Responsibilities
Partners often bring different ideas about spending, saving, debt, and financial independence into the relationship. In fact, nearly half of couples avoid the topic altogether because of how heated it can become. We can discuss what money represents to each of you and how you want to approach shared decisions.
Household responsibilities are another important topic. Talking about who plans, remembers, organizes, and follows through can help make expectations clearer before resentment builds.
Family Relationships and Boundaries
Marriage often brings questions about cultural and family traditions, privacy, and whose opinions influence your decisions. We can explore how your families shaped your expectations and what boundaries would support the relationship you want to create together.
Children and Parenting Expectations
Do you want children? What happens if your hopes or timelines differ? If either of you already has children, what expectations do you have about parenting roles? I can help you navigate discussions on responsibilities, discipline, family traditions, and how you want to support each other through change.
Emotional and Physical Intimacy
Feeling close involves more than spending time together. It also means being able to express affection, discuss needs, respect boundaries, and talk about differences without shame. During your premarital counseling sessions, we can make room for conversations about emotional connection, physical intimacy, and what helps each of you feel valued.
Values and Your Future Together
Career plans, faith, friendships, where you will live, and how you spend your time can all shape married life. You don’t need identical preferences. The goal is to understand where you align, where you differ, and how you want to make decisions when both perspectives matter
